Harry Potter Re-Read: Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5)Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’m auditing a Signum University/Mythgard class called Taking Harry Seriously this summer (taught by the amazing Dr. Amy Sturgis) and so am reading through the Harry Potter series again. Thought I would share my thoughts on Order of the Phoenix:

I’ve heard people say that Order of the Phoenix is their least favorite Harry Potter book–because Harry is too emotional, or whiny, or irritable. Then again, I’ve heard others criticize the series because Harry is just too good-natured and unaffected by the abuse he suffered as a child. J.K. Rowling must feel very frustrated at times.

Order of the Phoenix is one of my favorites of the Harry Potter series, and partly because Rowling didn’t just dismiss the traumatic and tragic events of the previous book and have Harry proceed as usual. He’s been even more traumatized and damaged by the events of Goblet of Fire–and that was only the beginning. Hogwarts students are down on him, events in the Wizarding World are growing darker–and then, there’s Delores Umbridge, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher who would make anybody whiny and irritable. Just hope you don’t get Detention with her.

In this book, masks literally come off. Characters Harry disliked in previous books show their true allegiances–and just how dark they really are. His personal problems become the problems of the entire wizarding world. This is a big, epic book that seems to usher in the end of the series, and I loved all 6 or 700 pages of it!
